Democracy Technologies

Democracy Technologies is a research initiative and curated database that maps the global landscape of digital tools and platforms for democratic participation. It is part of the Innovation in Politics Institute, based in Vienna and Berlin.

The platform tracks over 200 tools across categories including:

  • Participatory and deliberative platforms — tools for citizens' assemblies, crowdsourcing, and structured discussion
  • Voting and decision-making tools — platforms for digital referenda, ranked-choice voting, and liquid democracy
  • Engagement and consultation tools — tools used by governments and institutions for public consultation
  • Transparency and accountability tools — platforms for tracking elected officials and public spending

Each tool in the database is assessed across dimensions including: geographic deployment, open/closed source status, institutional backing, and type of democratic process supported.

For researchers, practitioners, and funders working in democratic innovation, Democracy Technologies provides one of the most comprehensive starting points for mapping the existing tool ecosystem before building something new or choosing a platform for deployment.
